Solution-Focused Therapy is an empowering, goal-oriented approach that focuses on solutions, rather than problems or symptoms. The psychologist and client work together to identify how the client’s life would be different if the problems or symptoms that they are experiencing were gone or reduced. Based on this exploration small, meaningful and concrete goals are created and a plan for working towards these goals is established.
A key task in Solution-Focused Therapy is the identification of strengths, successes and inner resources. One of the key ways strengths are discovered is by exploring exceptions. Exceptions are times when the problem or symptoms could have occurred but didn’t, or were less severe. A Solution-Focused approach emphasises strengths and successes, helping the client to direct their attention and energy towards what they can do, rather than what they can’t.
