The Australian Government will now provide 10 additional Medicare subsidised psychology sessions for those subjected to further restrictions due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is in addition to the existing 10 sessions per calendar year already subsidised under Medicare.
These sessions will be available to:
- Clients in areas with public health orders that restrict movement (e.g. lockdown or stay at home orders) within the estate or territory any time from 1 July 2020 to 31 March 2021 and clients that are required to isolate or quarantine under public health orders.
To access this Medicare funding you will need to:
- Have a Mental Health Treatment Plan
- Have used all of your ten sessions in the calendar year; and
- Return to your GP for a review after your 10th session
Once you are deemed eligible, you will be able to access these additional sessions even if public health orders are lifted.
Health Minister Greg Hunt has also indicated that if other regions are subjected to further restrictions, they will also be granted this increased mental health support.
This pandemic is taking a huge toll on the mental health of many Australians. We are so pleased that the Government has recognised this impact and opened up this option for clients to continue to receive support during this unprecedented time.
