Seeing a psychologist is often more affordable than you think.
Depending on your individual circumstances, there are two ways that you can access psychology sessions at a reduced cost:
Medicare rebates for counselling
Through Medicare’s “Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative” you may be eligible to receive a rebate for psychology services.
The initiative is available if your GP believes you meet particular criteria for a mental health issue. In addition to mental health conditions, this can also include having difficulties adjusting to changes in your life such as losing a loved one, going through a divorce or separation, being unemployed or going through a break-up.
Eligible clients receive a rebate between $92.90 and $131.65 for up to ten individual sessions per calendar year.
It is up to your GP to decide whether you are eligible for a Medicare referral.
If you are, they will give you a document known as a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which will enable you to claim your rebate.
At Inner Melbourne Clinical Psychology we have an online system set up that allows us to arrange your rebate for you so that you don’t need to complete the paperwork yourself.
Speak with your GP or get in touch with our Support Team here if you have questions about whether you might be eligible for a Medicare referral.
Please note that we are not a bulk-billing clinic, so we are not able to offer bulk-billed appointments – although as we’ve noted above we can offer Medicare rebates with a referral. If you are specifically looking for a bulk-billing psychology practice visit the Australian Psychological Society directory here.
Private health cover for counselling services
If you have private health insurance that includes psychological counselling as extras cover you may be eligible for a partial rebate. It is recommended that you contact your insurance provider for further information about your coverage because the amount rebated depends on the insurance company and level of insurance that you have.
How we can help
Depending on what you would like assistance with and how many sessions you might need, our psychologists will do their best to work with you to create a plan that is in line with your budget.
Click here to book an appointment with one of our experienced psychologists or call our friendly Support Team on (03) 9376 1958.
If you would like to explore other low-cost counselling options, we’ve also created a list of organisations based in Melbourne and online.
