What is it like to be in a room with me as a supervisor?
I like to create a light atmosphere where it feels easy to raise difficult and sometimes sensitive issues. I believe supervision with me involves a collaborative conversation focusing on how to develop as a practitioner. I remain fascinated by our work several decades in and I think this brings a genuine enthusiasm and positive energy into the room.
My approach is non-judgemental – I know how difficult our work is. And I like to be able to incorporate a sense of humour when appropriate. I am always more than happy to share my own experiences but do like to hear supervisees’ reflections and ideas first.
Three books that have influenced my work as a psychologist:
‘Cognitive Therapy in Action’
by Ivy-Marie Blackburn and Vivien Twaddle (I did a long placement with Vivien, who really influenced my approach to formulation)
‘Psychoanalytic Diagnosis’
by Nancy McWilliams (although this is due for another read)
‘Aware’
by Daniel J Siegel (a late comer to the list but strongly influential)
Circumstances under which I provide supervision:
- Supervision for fully registered psychologists
- Secondary supervision or consults
Areas that I am happy to provide secondary consults on:
- Mental health and psychiatric illness in adults and older adults
Circumstances under which I don’t provide supervision:
- Supervision related to AHPRA complaints
- Supervision for court reports
- Supervision solely for written assessments
